A home with out a proper grounding system is like a plumbing system with out a drain.Your homes grounding system is a vital part of its electrical system, and your safety.
A ground ensures that if there was ever any electricity that suddenly entered your electricalsystem abruptly, that it would have a safe place to go. If lightning struck your home, the electricity has to go somewhere, and it is looking for a way to get to the actual ground. If your system isn’t grounded, the electricity could come out of outlets, it could burn or arc across wires inside of walls, and could damage almost any appliance! It is very important that your home is grounded properly.
Every electrical system is required by the NEC to have (2) grounds. The first is what they call a cold water ground, it is a wire that is attached from your panel to a cold water copper pipe. The second is a copper grounding rod that must be drove into the ground, and a wire attached from it to the panel.
If the technician recommended this too you, it would be a great idea to get it done in order to protect your home and family. Once the grounding system is in place, it is not something that should have to be replaced.
If you were to sell your home, the new buyer may request that this be done. Some equipment such as medical may require that the home be grounded properly as well. Most surge protectors don’t work well either if the home isn’t grounded.
